Why I Decided to Buy a Foldable Keyboard

I use my smartphone daily for web browsing, social media, and watching videos.

One of the best things about smartphones is their portability—whether I’m out and about or just lounging in bed, I can access content anytime, anywhere!

However, typing on a smartphone can be a struggle.

Most people use the on-screen keyboard, either by tapping or using flick input. But since you can only type with one finger, it’s much slower than using a physical keyboard. Many people, including myself, find it frustrating when trying to type longer texts, like social media posts or blog entries.

Because of this, I’ve always preferred using my PC for writing. However, that meant I had to sit at my desk, power on my desktop, and—most importantly—I couldn’t write freely while on the go. I wanted a way to type comfortably from anywhere.

Buying a laptop or a tablet with a keyboard just for text input wasn’t financially practical, so I started researching alternatives. That’s when I discovered Bluetooth keyboards designed for smartphones and tablets.

Compact Keyboard Options

There are two main types of compact, portable keyboards:

  • Shrunken Layout Keyboards – These keep the traditional keyboard layout but reduce the key size and key spacing.
  • Foldable Keyboards – These maintain full-sized keys and key spacing but fold for portability.

Since my goal was to type on my smartphone as comfortably as on a PC, I chose the second option: a foldable keyboard.

Why I Chose the EWiN Foldable Keyboard

I chose the EWiN Foldable Keyboard with Stand-Function Cover for the following reasons:

Why I chose EWiN Foldable Keyboard with Stand-Function Cover?
  • Compatible with Android OS (since I use an Android smartphone)
  • Similar key pitch to a regular PC keyboard
  • Enter key shape matches a standard Japanese PC keyboard
  • Includes a touchpad for easier navigation
  • Ranked highly on comparison sites
  • EWiN offers a wide variety of keyboard models
  • Reasonably priced at around 5,000 yen during an Amazon sale
  • Comes with a stand-function cover, setting it apart from similar products

Why I Chose a Touchpad Keyboard

While researching foldable keyboards, I noticed that many models come with a touchpad. Since a touchpad allows for PC-like operation, I decided it would be a convenient addition.

Comparing Keyboard Brands

Several brands manufacture foldable keyboards, including:

Japanese brands like MOBO and ELECOM provide reliable customer support, but I prioritized variety and cost-effectiveness, which led me to choose EWiN, a Chinese electronics manufacturer.

I found this keyboard on Amazon for just over 5,000 yen during a sale. While this isn’t exactly cheap (especially compared to my wired PC keyboard, which cost around 2,000 yen), it was still a reasonable price for a feature-rich, foldable keyboard.

EWiN offers various keyboards for smartphones and tablets, which you can check out here:

Among them, I picked one with both a touchpad and a stand function for better usability:

Key Features of This Keyboard

One of the best aspects of this keyboard is its familiar typing experience—the key pitch and layout closely resemble a standard Japanese PC keyboard.

  • Key Pitch: 18mm (Almost identical to a full-size PC keyboard, which is typically 19mm) → Ensures comfortable typing
  • Enter Key Shape: Standard L-shape, unlike many compact keyboards that shrink the Enter key → Reduces typing errors

Here’s a side-by-side comparison with a regular PC keyboard:

Stand-Function Cover for Extra Convenience

The included stand cover lets you prop up your smartphone or tablet, making it much easier to type.

Additionally, EWiN provides a support site and includes a one-year warranty for their products:

Hands-on Review: EWiN Foldable Keyboard

Now, let’s dive into the actual hands-on review of the EWiN Foldable Keyboard that I purchased from Amazon!

Packaging

The keyboard comes in a neatly printed box, as shown below.

Inside the box, you’ll find:
✅ The keyboard with its cover
✅ A charging cable

📌 Note: There is no manual included in the box.

Instead, the back of the box has a QR code that directs you to add a LINE account named “ewin-Qu" to download the manual. While the account name might seem a bit suspicious, I added it as a friend and haven’t received any strange notifications so far.

However, for those who don’t want to add it, here is the direct link to the manual:

First Impressions & Build Quality

No rubber grips on the back, but it stays stable on a table while typing.

The keyboard comes folded but can be easily unfolded by hand.

The surface has a slightly metallic plastic finish, giving it a premium look.

The backside is made of synthetic leather, adding a touch of luxury.

Size & Weight

  • With cover: 416g
  • Keyboard only: 258g

For reference, when folded, the keyboard is about the same size as a manga book (including thickness), so it won’t take up much space in your bag.

Cover Stand Functionality

The instruction manual does not provide any details on how to use the cover, which initially caused some confusion. However, after experimenting, I found that by folding it with the “EWiN" logo facing forward, the built-in magnets lock the angle, allowing it to function as a stand for smartphones and tablets.

Fixed Viewing Angle: While there’s no adjustable angle, the default position is perfect for typing on a desk.

Secure Closure: When using it as a cover, the magnets hold it firmly in place, ensuring that it won’t come loose inside your bag while moving.

How to Set Up (Pairing, OS Switching, and Device Switching)

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to set up and use the keyboard:

Pairing the Keyboard via Bluetooth

1️⃣ Turn on Bluetooth on your smartphone or tablet.
2️⃣ Power on the keyboard—you’ll see the numbers in the top-right corner briefly light up and then turn off.

Switching Between Devices

When switching, the corresponding ①, ②, or ③ indicator will light up for one second before turning off, confirming the selected channel.

The keyboard supports three different channels, allowing you to connect up to three devices simultaneously.

To switch between them, press Fn + A, S, or D.

Connecting to a Device

Once connected, you should see a mouse cursor appear on your smartphone screen, allowing you to control it using the keyboard.

On your smartphone/tablet, go to Bluetooth settingsAdd a new deviceSelect “Bluetooth 5.1 keyboard".

Changing OS Settings

  • Press Fn + Q, W, E, or R to switch between operating systems:
    • Q → iOS
    • W → Windows
    • E → Android
    • R → Mac

How to Use the Touchpad

The touchpad allows you to control the mouse cursor by moving one finger across its surface.

Gesture Controls (Android Example)

🔹 Two-finger scroll → Scroll vertically or horizontally
🔹 Pinch to zoom → Spread or pinch two fingers to zoom in and out, just like a smartphone touchscreen

Mouse Buttons & Click Options

Below the touchpad, there are two physical buttons corresponding to:
🔘 Left button → Left-click
🔘 Right button → Right-click

You can also lightly tap the touchpad itself for a left-click action.

Language Settings on the Connected Device

By default, the printed characters on the keyboard may not match the actual input characters when typing. This issue can be fixed by adjusting the keyboard settings on your connected device.

How to Fix Input Mismatch (Android Example)

1️⃣ Go toSettings
2️⃣ SelectSystem
3️⃣ TapLanguages & Input
4️⃣ ChoosePhysical Keyboard
5️⃣ SelectBluetooth 5.1 Keyboard
6️⃣ Set Keyboard LayoutJapanese

✅ After completing these settings, the keyboard should input characters exactly as printed on the keys. Make sure to test it to confirm!

User Experience

Now, let’s go over my actual experience using the EWIN folding keyboard!

Typing Experience

Since the key pitch and shape are almost identical to a standard PC keyboard, I was able to type at the same speed as I would on my computer.

Here’s a recorded screen of me typing—I’m able to type just as fast as I do on my PC.

Compared to the one-finger flick input on a smartphone, the physical keyboard definitely makes typing much faster and more efficient.

However, because this is a thin, low-profile keyboard, the keys are very shallow, so it doesn’t have the satisfying keypress feel that some users may prefer.

Additionally, while it isn’t particularly loud, the membrane key switches produce a soft “plasticky” sound, so it isn’t a silent keyboard either.

🔹 Limitations: On my Android device, some shortcuts like “Ctrl + S" don’t work, which can be inconvenient if you’re used to Windows shortcuts. 😅

Touchpad Performance

The touchpad is functional, but it has some quirks:
Basic cursor movement works well.
⚠️ Scrolling with two fingers can feel slightly choppy.
⚠️ Mouse button clicks require a bit more force than expected.

If you prioritize smooth cursor movement, I’d recommend using a Bluetooth mouse instead.

That said, the built-in touchpad is still useful—it allows me to control the cursor without needing a separate mouse, and it keeps everything compact and portable.

Overall, I’m glad I chose a model with a touchpad, as it makes using the keyboard much more convenient!

Pros and Cons

To wrap things up, here’s a summary of the pros and cons of the EWIN folding keyboard.

While there are some settings to learn and the touchpad has a few quirks, I believe that once you get the hang of it, this is a highly functional and convenient product.

Here’s a breakdown to help you when deciding whether or not to purchase:

(Note: Durability is still unknown, so I have excluded it from the evaluation for now.)

Pros and Cons of EWiN Foldable Keyboard with Stand-Function Cover

Pros

  • Compact size when folded, roughly the size of a manga book, making it easy to carry around.
  • Key layout and shape are nearly identical to a standard Japanese PC keyboard, making typing comfortable.
  • Touchpad included, which makes it easy to control the cursor without an external mouse.
  • Stand function in the cover allows easy use as a tablet or phone stand.
  • Affordable, priced in the 5000 yen range.
  • Can connect up to 3 devices at once.
  • Long battery life.
  • Japanese manual with clear instructions.

Cons

  • Requires setup on both the keyboard and smartphone/tablet to fully utilize the features.
  • Scrolling on the touchpad can feel a bit choppy.
  • Clicking the touchpad buttons requires some extra force.
  • Typing experience isn’t as satisfying as a mechanical keyboard.
  • Not a quiet keyboard—it produces noise typical of membrane switches.

Conclusion

I hope this review of the EWIN folding keyboard with multifunctional cover stand has been helpful!

While there are some quirks, it has made typing on my smartphone and tablet much more convenient, and I’m glad I purchased it.

As for durability, I’ll update the review if anything changes. Let me know if you have any questions! 😊
